Lamar County School of Technology
Spotlight on Precision Machining
The precision machining program at the Lamar County School of Technology provides specialized classroom and laboratory experiences of current and emerging technology in all aspects of creating specialized metal parts. Instruction involves making computations relating to work dimensions, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining. Also emphasized in this class is safety, bench work, lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drills as well as the uses of precision measuring instruments. These include the following: layout tools, micrometers, and gauges. The following skills are also taught: methods of machining, heat treatment of various metals, blueprint reading, and the layout of machine parts. Instruction in this class prepares students to operate machines, and it follows the
NIMS (National Institute of Metalworking Sciences) guidelines. Students learn these skills while working on machines similar to ones they will come into contact with when they continue their education at the post-secondary level or when they enter the workforce.
Upon completion of two years in the precision machining program, students have the ability to earn college credit from both Bevill State Community College and from Shelton State Community College. This will allow students to take fewer classes in college which will save them both time and money when compared to their counterparts who have had no training during their high school careers. Former members of this class have received many presidential scholarships, paying all of their tuition for two years at Bevill State Community College or Shelton State Community College. This amounts to about $3000.00 saved in tuition costs.
The Lamar County School of Technology is proud to welcome Mr. Jason Rye as the new instructor for our precision machine department. He takes the helm after the retirement of long-time instructor Mr. Dempsey Hatcher. Mr. Rye has worked as a machinist for 10.5 years at G & G Steel and MCM. If you would like further information regarding the precision machining department at the Lamar County School of Technology, please feel free to contact the school at 205-695-7129.

SPOTLIGHT ON WELDING
The goal of the Lamar County School of Technology is to provide students with skills necessary to be job ready upon completion of their high school/technical school curriculum or to continue their educational endeavors at the post secondary level. The success rate of the students who graduate from the Lamar County School of Technology has been very high whether they choose to use their skills to join the workforce or to continue their education. Students are also taught job search skills, resume writing skills, and job interview skills to further secure their career opportunities.
This month’s featured program at the Lamar County School of Technology is our welding program. The welding course offers a guide to skills and knowledge in the safe operation of electric arc welding equipment, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux core arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding. It also offers training in oxyacetylene welding, brazing, and flame cutting equipment.
The major emphases in the welding department are to combine skills in care of shop tools and equipment, to develop work habits, leadership potential, good attendance, and to develop within student’s critical thinking skills and problem solving methods. Safety and performance are also stressed throughout the course.
The students are also given the opportunity to participate in NCCER (The National Center for Construction Education and Research) testing. NCCER develops standardized construction and maintenance curricula and assessments with portable credentials. These credentials are tracked through NCCER’s National Registry which allows organizations and companies to track the qualifications of their craft professionals and/or check the qualifications of possible new hires. We are very proud of Mr. Gary Freeman and the welding students who participated in NCCER testing during the 2012-2013 school year. Mr. Freeman’s class was ranked in the top ten in the state of Alabama for the number of credentials awarded to our students. This is a major achievement and showcases the dedication of the instructor and students at the Lamar County School of Technology.
Students who have graduated from our welding program have gone on to work in industry for companies such as Marathon, NAACO, Ox Bodies, Severstal and Steel Dust Plant.
